September 11, 1998: The French Government has released an in-depth
policy analysis on Internet
et les réseaux numériques. Chapter V of the report examines
domain names and trademark rights. The report is currently only available
in French with English and Spanish versions available in October 1998.
July 15, 1998: The Internet Architecture Board (IAB) has announced
its new appointees to the gTLD-MoU Policy Oversight
Committee. The new appointees are Pindar
Wong and Lars-Johan Liman. Pindar
Wong will immediately take up the seat vacated by Patrik Faltstrom, which
runs until August 2000. Lars-Johan Liman will take up the seat to be vacated
by Rob Austein at the end of August 1998, for three years until August
2001. The Policy Oversight Committee would like to express its appreciation
for the dedication and contributions of the departing IAB appointees, Patrik
Faltstrom and Rob Austein.
July 9, 1998: The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)
has now announced
details on the international process to develop recommendations concerning
intellectual property issues associated with Internet domain names, including
domain name dispute resolution. WIPO has now issued background information,
the process timetable, its first Request for Comments on the Terms of
Reference, Procedures and Timetable for the WIPO Internet Domain Name Process
(comment deadline is August 17, 1998), and details on participation in
the process.
March 31, 1998: The United States House of Representatives Committee
on Science, Subcommittee on Basic Research and Subcommittee on Technology,

December 17, 1997: The World Intellectual Property Organization
(WIPO) has announced a new appointment to the gTLD-MoU Policy Oversight
Committee (POC). The new appointee is Christopher
Gibson, Senior Legal Officer, WIPO
Arbitration and Mediation Center, appointed with the status of a non-voting
observer. The Policy Oversight Committee would like to express its appreciation
for the dedication and contributions of the departing WIPO appointee, Albert
Tramposch.
November 27, 1997: Following the appointment of two representatives
from the Council of Registrars (CORE) on November 25, 1997, and in accordance
with Article 6h of the gTLD-MoU, the interim Policy Oversight (iPOC)
has been dissolved and is now the Policy Oversight Committee (POC).
November 25, 1997: The Council of Registrars (CORE) has announced
its appointees to the gTLD-MoU Policy Oversight
Committee. The appointees are Alan Hanson (Chairman of CORE) and Amadeu
Abril i Abril.
November 21, 1997: The deadline for submission of comments to the
iPOC Request for Comments (RFC) Notice-97-03, "Proposed Trademark Dispute
Resolution: Draft Substantive Guidelines for Administrative Domain Name
Challenge Panels" (see notice and questions),
had earlier been extended from November 7 to November 21, 1997. In response
to a number of recent requests, and to assure that there is sufficient
time for additional comments to be submitted, that deadline has again been
extended, from November 21 to December 5, 1997. Please see the notice
for details on submissions of comments and links to received comments.
November 13, 1997: The gTLD-MoU interim Policy Oversight Committee,
after reviewing responses
received to the public request for comments Notice-97-02:
Review of new generic Top Level Domains (gTLDs), consultation with
the Council of Registrars (CORE), and the gTLD-MoU Policy Advisory Body
(PAB), has concluded a review of the 7 gTLD names suggested in the final
report of the International Ad Hoc Committee's (IAHC's) Recommendations
for Administration and Management of gTLDs. The conclusions of
this review are confirmation of .firm, .web, .info, .arts, .rec &
.nom
as names of new gTLDs and the replacement of .store with the gTLD
.shop.

October 24, 1997: CORE Announces
Signing Letter of Intent with Emergent Corporation for the development
and operation of the Shared Registry System (SRS). The SRS is the
neutral, shared database repository that co-ordinates registrations from
CORE registrars and causes names to enter the global Internet Domain Name
System (DNS).October 24, 1997: An article in Connected
Magazine: Getting
to the core of Internet governance features an interview with David
Maher, chairman of the Interim Policy Oversight Committee (iPOC).
October 19, 1997: The final version of the CORE-MoU
is now available. This supersedes the draft
posted on July 17, 1997. The CORE-MoU has been signed by the Chairman of
iPOC on October 18, 1997 and will now be circulated for signature to the
entities
qualifying under the gTLD registrar selection process.
October 19, 1997: The Internet Society (ISOC) Board of Trustees
has announced its new appointees to the gTLD-MoU Policy Oversight Committee.
The new appointees are Mr. Christopher Wilkinson (3 year term) and and
Mr. David Maher (1 year term). See the ISOC web site for

October 15, 1997: A revised version of the CORE
Articles of Association is available. This version was approved by
CORE at its foundational extraordinary meeting on October 3, 1997. This
supersedes the draft posted on May 23, 1997.
October 1, 1997: The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA)
has announced its
new appointees to the gTLD-MoU Policy Oversight Committee. The new
appointees are Glenn Kowack (3 year term) and and Willie Black (1 year
term). The interim Policy Oversight Committee would like to express its
appreciation for the dedication and contributions of the departing IANA
appointees, Dave Crocker and Perry Metzger.

July 15, 1997: Members of the interim Policy Oversight Committee
(iPOC) and the Policy Advisory Body under the gTLD-MoU will participate
in the Forum on Internet Domain Names on July 30 and July 31, 1997 in Washington,
D.C. The Forum is being sponsored by the Information Technology Association
of America (ITAA), the Interactive Services Association (ISA) and the Center

May 26 - 30, 1997: The World Intellectual Property Organization
(WIPO) is hosting a Consultative
Meeting on Trademarks and Internet Domain Names, to be held in Geneva,
May 26-30, 1997. The meeting will include representatives of WIPO member
States, as well as of interested intellectual property and Internet non-governmental
organizations. The topics to be discussed include all aspects of trademarks
in relation to Internet domain names, including the gTLD-MoU policies,
and the related dispute resolution procedures.
