POLICY OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE TO COOPERATE WITH
SELF-GOVERNANCE PROCESS PROPOSED BY US GOVERNMENT
Chicago, IL, USA, June 9, 1998 -- David Maher, Chairman of the gTLD-MoU
Policy Oversight  Committee (POC), today issued the following statement regarding
the policy released on Friday, June 5 by the United States Government on the future
of  the Internet's domain name system:

"The Policy Oversight Committee welcomes the White Paper's commitment to
self-governance of the Internet's Domain Name System.  Consistent with our
commitment to responsible private sector governance of the Internet, POC is
prepared to join in a process of open discussion, using the Internet and other
means. We believe that the next step will be to work towards converging on
general principles for the new organization. We support the position of the Internet
Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) in preparing to transition its responsibilities
to an international not-for-profit corporation run by a board of directors representing
the spectrum of Internet interests around the world. The experience of the POC in
evolving its plan for adding new generic top level domains to the domain name
system will be a valuable asset to this new corporation and we look forward to
playing an active role in the deliberations of the new corporation."
