Re: First come/First served
While first-come/first-served is fair in many senses, it
would not avoid the big problem that we face in domain
naming today. This problem is that names are extremely
important assets of organizations. They are also
extremely important to customers. If I see DukeU, I want
to know that this is the University, not some flim-flam
artist using DukeU.com to make it seem like messages are
coming from a university. In the commercial world, there
are well-defined ways for handling conflicts in naming
among corporations in the same commercial area and in
different commercial areas. The problem we have today is
that the single .COM domain makes it impossible to create
such rational compromises. As everyone knows, the Internet
is now largely commercial. We need to be hospitable to
that world. The composition of the team now assembled
seems reasonable for addressing domain name compromises in
the commercial world.
