Michael posted earlier about requiring street addresses for domain names.
I think this is absurd. Number one, I don't know my street address.
Weird? Well I'm currently a student at a university where we all get
Boxes at one central place. Our dorm rooms/buildings do not have
addresses. I'm sure if I really wanted to I could find one, I suppose.
And my home address is in another state, so warrants served there would
not help much.
But the main reason lies in that I value my privacy. I use Box addresses
because DNS info is publicly available. I get enough junk mail through
my email; and I get junk mail through my PoBox. I don't need that sort
of junk mail at home. If someone needs to get in touch with me, whether
it be law enforcement or what not, they can use email, or if its a serious
matter, they can always consult the local police and they'll look it up.
However I do not want Joe Schmoe to get my home address off the Net.
Possibly requiring a Zip Code is fair, or some sort of general locality
indication. Then if law enforcements needs to get in touch with you,
they can always contact local police.
