There is something that you are not considering:
Why can't a company have more than one domain name?
Checking our database, we have 832 .USA entries which are just aliases
for something.com or something.org, etc. (ie: www.abc.usa is a CNAME
pointing to www.abc.com, etc).
At first, people will be suspicious and stick exclusivly to the traditional
TLD's, but adventuresome souls will brave the new world and with all of the
media hoopla, the new TLD's will quickly catch on. No one that I know would
ditch their .COM address, they will simply get a
.USA/.WEB/.XXX/.WHATEVERCOOLTLDISPOPULARTODAY
address as well. With Virtual Hosts, some very clever things can be done.
Question to the committee: Are you considering putting a statement in the
new policy requiring .COM/.ORG/.NET to be subject to the rules of the
policy? In my opinion, you should. You should treat NSI as a registry
whose charter will expire in 1998 and should require them to abide by
rules after that point.
