One possible compromise solution would be to treat TLDs like some
other forms of intellectual property such as copyrights and patents,
and institute a limited monopoly period (e.g., 1 year) after which the
domain becomes shared. Implementation might be tricky...

Of course, however given the volatility of the "squatocracy", I find
it doubtful the IAHC would survive with all their assets intact should
such an approach be taken. Wouldn't such preferential treatment be
dangerous?
Brings up an interesting (as in the way the Ebola virus is
interesting) point: when (not if) the IAHC gets sued, who's going to
be the fall person/organization? ISOC? IANA? Each individual
member? Or am I being too cynical again? :-)
