I'm not saying that government intervention is a "bad" thing -- but if
governments were the solution why do we have several hundred countries, a
couple dozen wars and a passle of international "umbrella" organizations?
People in the US seem to think that it is acceptable (maybe not
preferable) that the US government steps in and takes the lead. Would
these same people find it acceptable if some other countries government
stepped in and took the lead? Probably not. To the same end I can see why
people in other countries feel squimish about the US government (or even
US "entities" trying to run things).
The internet is becoming (has always been?) the first "global" community
and as such has the unique oppertunity to become the first "globally" run
community and should be given the chance at self-governance (ie., without
current governments stepping in unless they are specifically asked for
help).
We (yes, the royal "we") are standing here on the brink of something -- it
is not what the original developers of arpanet intended, but it is what it
has become -- it is time for the entire population of the world to be
united in some form or fashion -- why not thru the governance of the
internet in additional to its use?
