First, let me retract some of the "FNC thinks this" flavor of my
earlier posting. As one of the FNC members has correctly rebuked
me, I was not speaking for the FNC and I should not have used
phrases like that. At the beginning of my earlier message I said:
>>Allow me to speak as the NASA representative to the Federal
>>Networking Council. I am sure that many of the other members
>>of the FNC would agree with my views.
As I read over my earlier message, I was thinking of that earlier
qualifying statement, but it does not transfer in context. Mea culpa.
Second, however, in response to Eugene's comment above:
I do believe that there are many aspects of this TLD governance problem
that an IETF WG should probably work on. I hope that the IAHC does
not come up with a "good ol' boys" solution, but instead analyzes the
problem with the help of the community and starts up several open
activities that lead to the total community-wide solution. The reason
that I -- speaking as NASA representative to the FNC (not speaking for
the FNC :-) -- believe that the IAHC is the de facto legitimate process is that
I know from many experiences that to figure out -- within this fledgling
Internet international community, with so many players, expanding so
explosively -- what the process is would be impossible until a process
is established! That's what good ol' boys are good for, to act responsibly
to help the community find the point at which it can govern itself.
Good ol' boys are not good at running things forever.
In the absence of the IAHC, my own opinion is that we would have chaos
in the TLD area, and that does not benefit the community. (Speaking
for myself.)
