I appreciate Don's comments with regard to the "high-level" view of
things.. I can also understand why some people feel that they should be
able to make money off of domain names (I don't happen to agree with them,
but I can understand them). I also know that 99% of the people here are
not going to be 100% happy with anything that the IAHC may recommend.
What I would really like for someone to explain slowly and rationally to
me (if the would be so kind) is why do we need any more iTLDs if not for
profit reasons? Would it not make more sense to go through the current
process and straighten it out?
Come up with a more "reasonable" way of handling the current space and
then retro-fitting it to apply to the current domains? Yes, it means that
90% of the people who currently have an iTLD would have to move to a ISO
domain... yes, it would mean a whole lot of people are going to be a bit
unhappy... but it would be (in my opinion) completely justifyable to do
it.
It has been done before (like the move from hosts to domains) and it will
happen again with IPng (heck, I *L*O*V*E* my IP address... and I don't
think I should EVER have to change it!!!!!!!)
Sit down, write some EXTREMELY clear guidelines for obtaining and keeping
iTLD names (as well as some EXTREMELY clear guidelines for what a SL name
can be) and then go through all of the current domains one by one and
either allow them or revoke them based on those guidelines.
I do not remember seeing anything (either written or implied) that told me
that I was was going to get to keep my domain for eternity, or did I miss
the fine print??
(I didn't say any of this would be easy, but really, in the sense of the
the internet "community", etc, to me at least it seems that it would make
the most sense?
