See "Welcome to the wide, wide world of domain names, trademarks and the
courts" at
<http://dev.abanet.org/lsd/stulawyer/jan97onl.html> which comments on NSI's
handling of trademark domain name issues. A quotation:
" ... And where does this leave Network Solutions Inc.? In a self-induced
purgatory. It acts with all the finality of a government entity (in this
case, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, which decides whether or not to
grant legal protection for marks) but claims to not perform the duties
necessary to make such a service complete. On top of that, it suspends use
of any domain name involved in litigation (absent proof of prior
registration of the mark) regardless of the merit of the litigation--meaning
that anyone could tie up use of a domain while a lawsuit runs its course. It
seems at this point that NSI is trying to have its cake and eat it, too.
"Either NSI is accountable or it isn't. If it doesn't decide--and soon--the
courts will."
