While DNS registries currently provide directory services of a sort via
whois, rwhois and homegrown protocols, I think that the network industry's
push behind the LDAP directory access protocol means that registries
should focus on supplying LDAP services. Netscape is one of the main
companies pushing for LDAP as a standard and is nuilding LDAP into the
next generation of their browser. With 80% of the market this cannot be
ignored. If registries do not wish to purchase a commercial LDAP server
from Netscape Corp. they can use the free implementation available from
umich.edu which can be integrated with backend databases.
