To follow up to my points regarding the inability of IANA to
play a more active role in ensuring robustness of DNS management
around the world, I strongly suggest to the IAHC members and
to IANA that they actively work with nationals of other countries
to establish (or expand) more NICs around the world. These
NICs will work in close coordination with both the IAHC and
IANA.
>From the few discussions that went on regarding nTLDs, most
seem to see the value of sharing experiences and/or making
recommendations to countries around the world on DNS and TLD
matters. Well, this certainly calls for more NICs to facilitate
these recommendations to the 160? countries that are currently
connected to the Internet in one way or another.
For instance, Middle Eastern countries still have to go through
IANA for TLD and DNS issues. APNIC only covers countries eastward
to include Iran. This leaves over 21 countries that fall in
the geographical gap between the APNIC and the European NIC
areas of management. We can take a huge load off of IANA by
establishing a MENIC (Middle East NIC), especially as these
countries go fully online and provide Internet to their 260+
millions citizens.
I am personally willing to work with IANA and the IAHC on
establishing such a project. If anyone from that region
(or any closeby NICs) would like to contribute, please
contact me by email. Some north African countries are
attempting to start a NIC of some sort, I'll be glad to
coordinate with them as well.
These NICs will certainly play a vital role in overseeing
the proper handling and management of the gTLDs, once we
have overseas registeries.
