Is IAHC doing enough for the people who have driven change?

It appears from reading the report and comments in this list, that IAHC
have (whether intentionally or not) disadvantaged the very organisations
who have recognised the need for and driven the change process.

Now some of these folk may be outspoken and rebelious in nature. They have
been this way for a reason. Now you have some commitment to change, you
should not diminish their right to equal participation in the future by
coming up with a proposal that:-

* Only provides an opportunity for participation on the basis of a lottery
* Requires successful registrys to fund *marketing* of the new gTLD domains
whilst

Whilst the existing monopoly provider

* Has guaranteed participation
* Enjoys continued great business from the .com brand that *everybody* has
funded marketing of.

I understand that practical and technical considerations have lead to this
belief that a restriction on the number of players is necessary. I for one
believe very strongly that the fabric of the Internet should not be
compromised.

I suggest more risk comes from complex (meaning too many steps) processes
and lack of understanding and buy in from industry that you need to look
out for.

Find a way that encoruages participation from everybody, particularly those
smaller organisations who have their lives and families on the line right
now.

Like it or not, the World is looking to the IAHC for leadership in arriving
at decisions which meet *business* needs of the various players as well as
solve technical problems.

New Zealand's ISOC is at this time looking to see what you people decide,
before examining the .nz second level domain. We have similar issues. A
single registry for the commercial .co.nz domain, trademark infringement
risks etc.

I can well see my business facing the same issues after ISOC NZ follow the
lead of IAHC in holding a lottery to see who can "play in the sand pit"

Lets take the time to get it right for everybody. Particularly those who
have worked so hard to bring the change about!
