Re: Thread 5: Defining the namespace (was Re: Thread 1: Sharing)

Hi,
If we intend to have shared registries - and assume we are going to have
a central authority for dividing ip the name space - let's have at it.
>From looking a Yahoo - where they do use the library science approach -
the following categories emerge:

   * Arts and Humanities - .arts * News and Media [Xtra!] - .news
     Architecture, Photography, Current Events, Magazines, TV,
     Literature...                        Newspapers...

   * Business and Economy - .com * Recreation and Sports - .rec
     Companies, Investments, Sports, Games, Travel, Autos,
     Classifieds...                       Outdoors...

   * Computers and Internet - .net * Reference - .ref
     Internet, WWW, Software, Libraries, Dictionaries, Phone
     Multimedia...                        Numbers...

   * Education   - .edu                 * Regional - .geo
     Universities, K-12, College Countries, Regions, U.S.
     Entrance...                          States...

   * Entertainment - .ent               * Science - .sci
     Cool Links, Movies, Music, CS, Biology, Astronomy,
     Humor...                             Engineering...

   * Government  - .law                 * Social Science - .soc
     Military, Politics [Xtra!],          Anthropology, Sociology,
     Law...                               Economics...

   * Health [Xtra!] - .med * Society and Culture - .cult
     Medicine, Drugs, Diseases,           People,Environment,Religion...
     Fitness...

Some observations - .geo could be used as a gTLD to register nTLDs
.us.geo, .fr.geo, .ca.geo, .de.geo .....
Interesting - but precedence would probably not move us in this
direction. Instead we would probably remove .geo as a gTLD category
and have it covered by nTLDs.
We probably want to add .org in here for historical reasons.
There are a lot of organizations that over time would probably find
homes in different gTLDs.
This gives us 14 gTLDs with the following being new:
.arts
.news
.rec
.ref
.edu
.ent
.sci
.law
.soc
.med
.cult
BTW - I think the public gets the wrong message when movies are
advertised with www.movie-name.com - Let's find a good home for these
like movie-name.ent or maybe even a new category like movie-name.movie
Thoughts?
Thanks,
Alan
