Bill...You wrote to John Palmer:
I believe you start from a faulty premise, which is that
the Internet is strictly a commercial endevor. While there
are some commercial aspects to the Internet, it is by no means
commercialized on an international basis.
To which Leo Smith replied:
With due respect, Bill, I would suggest that the faulty premise may rest in
your assumption that because the Internet has non commercial aspects,
Internet registries, therefor, also have non commercial aspects.
The Internet certainly has aspects to its use that may not be commercial.
However, as it is proposed right now, the operation of a registry is 100%
a commercial endeavor. There are no government grants or other private
charitable contributions in place to support the financial start up needs
of the new registry business operation. Funding comes from stockholders, be
they private or public, that elect to invest the required capital because
of the return anticipated. The operation of a registry, currently proposed,
is nothing more and nothing less than a commercial, business venture.
