exclusivity of TLD's

Oh my, I almost agree with Karl Denninger on something!

I also fail to see the reason for having only one registry to support
multiple gTLDs. I believe that the proper model is to have one registry
FOR EACH gTLD, with CORE being relegated to the status of a trade
association or standard setting body. The membership of CORE would then
be composed of the registries and the registrars. The governing board
could then be composed of one-third registry representatives, one-third
registrar representatives, and one third Internet users.

Registrars could then have working relationships with one, two or all of
the registrys, as required. I see no need for every registrar to work
with every registry.

That would introduce a LOT more competition into the mix, without
requiring any additional technology beyond that already required for a
single shared registry.

So, why would this be unworkable?
