Vince wrote to Leo Smith... that (Leo Smith) had immediately taken up
the position that the TLD grabbers should be allowed to monopolize what
should be considered a public trust.
To which Leo Smith replies:
Vince...
My First introduction to the registry question was back in August, when jon
postel formulated his initial draft. I followed his update in October. His
draft espoused the notion of an exclusive license to each registry for 3
gTLDs. That draft made a lot of sense. Somehow, IAHC came out with
something completely opposite postel's draft...the idea of shared gTLDs,
with no registry having any exclusive license.
>From a business point of view...the operation of a successful, for profit
registry, requires some assurance of market value and marketshare prior to
committing investment capital. Right now we have no idea what 7 gTLDs are
at play, so we have no way of quantifying market value. With exclusive
registries, at least some marketshare is ensured...to the degree that a
market for the gTLD exists.
Under jon postel's draft, I see an opportunity to make money ...is that OK?
