Actually, I withdraw that statement. In reviewing further messages from
the July 1996 NEWDOM list I discovered one in which Jon said that he
believed the technical hurdles were minor but he couldn't see a business
case for shared registries at the time.

Agreed. However it is quite possibly that many companies who already
have the infrastructure in place, will offer registry services. Companies
like IBM, Digital, MCS, Relcom and organizations like NIC-FR, RIPN,
ISPA-UK etc.
