Re: Repository services and budget

Dave,

IMHO when building reliable, distributed, fault-tolerant
databases it is a good idea to have RAID 5 as a storage mechanism,
if only for preformance. Especilly with SQL databases, where the main
bottleneck is disk IO.

If the CORE db is also responsible for complete whitepages services
then IO and disk size will be more important. If the database uses
Object Oriented technology disk IO is considerably less. If CORE db
is responsible for only pointers to a distributed White pages then
disk IO and size are reduced.

IMHO when designing systems such as these, *ALL* factors that constitute
the 'system' should be taken into account rather then focuseing on how much
a piticular piece of the system should cost.

There are many ways to run what has been proposed as the CORE db, IMHO it
would be more helpful to the prespective registry opperators if we discussed
how they would interface into the database and what responsibilities of
the COREdb are, than discussing if services should be run on a PC or
Unix box.
