IMHO they aren't. If the user has full and direct control over the db records,
it opens the door for fraudulent operations, money laundering operations, scams,
and general unethic bahviour. I am not saying that the current system is
preventing this, by the way - in fact, there are several domain registrations
which I have seen in the InterNIC database, and which are complete smokescreens,
with PO Boxes, etc. and smell very fishy indeed.
Having a registry intervene and updating the information will at least keep
some sort of consistency to the database. If I decide to update gih.com and
say it's the domain for Diana in Kensington Palace, I'll have a hard time
convincing the people at InterNIC, whereas if I had direct access, I'd be able
to write anything in there. Heck, I could rename the company, and say it's
MEMRA (UK) and my name was Michael Dillon. :-)
