Not necessarily. The application with knowledge of the database itself
could run on the database machine and communicate via an open
protocol. Other methods are also possible.

Sure. Thats not the point. The only point I was making was that this
is a small, well understood database problem. We don't even have many
tables, high transaction rates or lots of data. This is a cakewalk
compared to many things I've seen done.
