1) Don't confine the new system to 7 gTLDs of 3-5 characters each.
Understand that hundreds of millions (maybe even billions) of people and
business will want Domain Names in the coming years. Open up "all" gTLDs,
and the trademark issue goes away.
2) Open up all gTLDs not just with 3-5 characters, but with 30 characters
before the "dot" and 20 after the dot! It might sound like a free for all
(like the American Wild Wild West), and it is. Don't think small ... THINK
BIG !
Want an example of not thinking big? The telephone area code fiasco that
we are experiencing in America. It seems that area codes change monthly.
3) At the rate of recent acceleration of Domain Name Registrations, three
new gTLDs will last only a couple of years (at best). Let's design a
system for the next 100 years without having to expand it every 2 years
with new gTLDs.
4) How do the trademark problems go away? Two examples:
the pabst.com conflict (Pabst Advertising vs. Pabst Beer)
could be resolved as follows
pabst.advertising
pabst.beer
imaginary conflict over disney.com (Disney Corporation vs. Don Disney)
could be resolved as follows
disney.don
disney.corporation
"Who is" searches would actually be quite effective if the following rules
were applied.
First name of corporation before the "dot"
Last name (Family Name) of person before the "dot"
What if there were two companies from different countries that had
Trademarked the same name of Sun. Then, first come, first serve. The
second one gets a numerical rank behind it. (AOL style)
sun.corporation
sun.corporation2
Either keep everything lower case ... or have upper case requests convert
to lower case so that all are the standardized.
5) A "free for all" would virtually eliminate the name speculators from the
game (unless they are wanted to generate unearned revenue). How, there are
simply too many possibilies to speculate on.
