Let A Million Flowers Blossum

(Repost from 16 Jul 1996 IIIA newdom list)

The current situation where one organization
monopolizes Domain name registration is fast
coming to a close. One way or another the people
who use this media will set up alternate domain
registries... as alternic has done. It is very
 inevitable and quite positive.

There will be many kinds of New domain name
registries... I would say there should be no
 limitations on this pseudo-commodity. Except
 for a central, co-operative meta-register the
field should be left open for all to do as they
please. First come, first serve. No holds barred.

And what will emmerge is a plethora of new
services worldwide. And there will be a period
of uncertainty. And changes will occur in the
future as well. The world is a huge place no one
group can control or even moderate.

This seems to be the only "alternative" to
either an insurrection or the continuing chaos
of an inadeqate monopoly. To try and regulate
this crazy den of snakes is sheer madness. We
must let a million flowers blossum... or they
will blossum anyways and we will look stupid.
