Yes indeed.  What we want is a world-wide level playing field.  With
a very large number of registrars, say 1000+, you will get low prices
and rapid innovation as people seek to improve their services to 
differentiate themselves from the rest of the mob.  This will be a 
very unpredictable and challenging world to do business in.  

What we are drifting towards is a cartel, with a few registrars who can
manipulate the rules to keep their prices and profits up.  

Why isn't the choice obvious?
