Re: "Why expand the number of gtld's at all?"



If I might add two more points for Tim Beckham to consider, in
addition to Andi Payn's nice summary :

These have appeared in newdom at various times in the past:

1.) To increase competitiveness in Domain name management.
This motivated a lot of the original interest, when
NSI started charging arbitrary fees for domain names
in .com, and also acting in an apparently high handed fashion
(dropping names without appeal, etc.).

2.) To avoid a "flat" DNS system, where there are many
millions of xyz.com names that all have to pass through
a few routers.
