(Newbie Query)

Dear All,

I've just read the last 10 days' postings and, my! what a vigorous
discussion group.

We're establishing an online enterprise and I want to secure a brilliant
domain name we've come up with.

It's too late to get the .com version as every conceivable word in the
entire English language seems to have been snaffled on the internic whois.

But what about if we pre-register under .shop on the gTLD system? The only
thing is that there seem to be about 85 registrars offering pre-registration
and some of them for an upfront fee. Fair enough, but I get the feeling from
the stuff I've been hearing on this list that it's not certain that this
gTLD thing will get up. Is this so?

Can you refer me to some article that gives a reasonable overview of the
current state of play? And the history of this controversy and the main
issues involved. I'm not so good at intuiting acronyms and my brain is
creaking as I try to cobble together a mental image of the whole dns
topography and the economics/politics involved.

I'd be very grateful for any guidance you can offer.
