Yes. The consensus is that the gTLD MOU is flawed.
In an Internet with 60 million plus users, in an Internet with 6,000+
ISPs, the gTLD MOU has 180 or so signatories. Plus 90 or so registrars.
Support for the gTLD MOU hovers in the 0.01% - 0.1% range. This is
nothing to be proud of.
Every ISP organisation in the world was asked to give their support to
the gTLD MOU. I know of none that has done so.
The MOU's most conspicuous supporter is ISOC, an Internet user's group
whose membership is also around the 0.01% level (6,000 ISOC members out
of 60,000,000+ users).
There are hundreds of examples of Internet organizations with more
support. In the UK, for example, support for Nominet's management of
the .UK name space is universal.
The MOUvement's most serious failing is their simple contempt for the
Internet community. They have made great efforts to build support at
government level and in legal circles. They are very proud of their
support at the ITU. But the industry and the larger Internet community
are ignored. We are just a detail in the grand scheme.
