Far away from where?

My work and life experience in the States have tought me that the
average American thinks about overseas in pretty much the same way the
old Romans thought about what was outside their empire: "Hic sunt
leones".
Probably, a different attitude would be more appropriate by
(self-defining?) hi-tech operators in the ages of the Global Society.
