Statement on Internet Domain Names
The Council of Registrars (CORE) has issued a statement
claiming that they will be operating a new domain name
registration system in the next month. This claim is
patently ridiculous. CORE has asserted that they have
authority over the domain name system. They clearly do
not. The Internet community, established governments, and
major Internet users share this responsibility.
CORE's continued claims to this role are the last dying
gasps of an ill-considered and failed power grab. Their
publicity stunts risk causing confusion and instability in
the domain name system.
The Internet community eagerly awaits the details of the
White House's report on the topic, to be issued shortly by
Senior Advisor to the President Ira Magaziner. Until then,
we call on CORE to stop their irresponsible grandstanding
on this issue. We also call on CORE to refund money taken
from consumers who were led to believe that CORE had the
authority to accept domain name registrations.
