FCN.NET, ML.ORG, EU,ORG: Free DNR

 FCN Free Domain Name Registrars/Registrations

http://fcn.net : Free Community Network provides domain names on a no charge,
volunteer basis for non-profit groups and the private use of individuals. We
believe that name services should be as close to free as possible and enjoy
doing our work as well as other things on the Net and in life. We are casual
and yet as efficient as any corporation, department or agency of government.
All without a budget, all based on donated resources and time.

FCN is similar to Aveek Datta's <adatta@ml.org> http://ml.org and Pierre
 Beyssac's <pb@fasterix.frmug.fr.net> http://eu.org both of which precede
our registry and feature many, many more domains. ML.ORG and EU.ORG both
function in the same manner as the FCN registry: volunteers and donated
resources. Both are highly successful endeavors as FCN intends to become.
Any one of these groups coud easily and instantly become Top Level Domain
 Registries/Registrars.

ML.ORG, EU.ORG and FCN are, one and all, fully capable, complete and
functioning Domain Name Registries/registrars. We operate without massive
bureaucracies and respect all technical and social guidelines. And all of
our services fly in the face of the contention that only multi-million
dollar corporations with 24 hour security, dozens of paid staff and so on
can join the Name Services provider business. It just isn't true.

There is as much room in the future for ventures such as ML.ORG, EU.ORG and
FCN as there is for IODesign's .WEB, Iperdome's .PER, CORE's .STORE or the
obequetous .COM. Let's make sure we ensure their survival as much as the
advance of any particular private enterprise. It is one of the obligations
and good traditions of the Net to do things for others for free and for
fun. Let's continue in this tradition shall we?

 Quotable quotes:

>From http://www.eu.org :
> EU.org, free domain names
>
> "Companies have voted with their feet [on the issue of domains], they want
> to have domain names that are international or at least country neutral. The
> same freedom should apply to individuals; all individuals should be able to
> have and own their own domain names".
>
> Paul Mockapetris, creator of the DNS, in On the Internet,
> September/October 1996.

>From http://www.ml.org/ml/freed/index.html :
> FreeDNS Service from MIS
>
> The Free DNS Service, or FREED for short, was the
> first service Monolith offered. It was offered in response
> to the Internic when they started charging for their second
> level domains. Monolith has always been a firm believer
> that some domains should be free, and this service is our
> contribution to the effort.
>
> FreeDNS service is ONLY for administrators who have
> their own machine on the Internet with a static IP
> address ...

>From http://fcn,net :
