Perhaps I can help. 

Bob, make sure that you put in the contract for your free domain names
that FCN will never charge a renewal for the same level of service that
you're giving away now for free. Make sure it's legal and binding.

If you want to start charging new customers down the line, that's your
decision - they may or may not buy. But as long as any existing
customers are contractually assured of free base-level service,
you're set.

Much like Image Online Design has stated time and again that
it will gladly put into any contract that prices won't be raised more
than a specified amount, perhaps tied to some indicator. Also,
you can purchase a name for any number of years in advance
(to some reasonable limit). Bob could "sell" free domain names
with a renewal period of 10 years.
