The Domain Name System moves forward
THE DOMAIN NAME SYSTEM MOVES FORWARD
Internet Stakeholders from all over the world met in Barcelona during this
last weekend to advance the creation of the Domain Name Supporting
Organisation (DNSO). This organisation is called for by the new
corporation, ICANN (Internet Corporation for the Assignment of Names and
Numbers), which will manage the shared resources of the Internet.
User, ISP, registrar, registry and trademark organisations participated in
the first meeting to create the organisation that, under the authority of
ICANN, will propose policy for administration of the Domain Name System.
The DNSO will develop and recommend substantive policies and procedures
regarding matters related to Domain Names.
Numerous agreements were reached by the participants in this very
successful meeting. The most important were:
- The DNSO will have international and diverse representation, as will the
Organisation's Executive Committee, which should have 11 to 19 members.
- The majority of economic support furnished by the DNSO to ICANN will be
provided by the Top Level Domain Registries (generic and country code
Domains)
The unexpected death of Dr. Jonathan Postel was announced during the
meeting. The respect of the participants for the key work that Dr. Postel
has performed during the years and the appreciation for his almost 30 years
of dedication to the Internet was expressed. A minute of silence was kept.
Afterwards, honouring the name of Dr. Postel, and in spite of the general
sadness, the meeting was continued, as its goal is to assure the continuity
of the work carried on by Dr. Postel, director of the Internet Assigned
Numbers Authority (IANA) until now.
A meeting to complete the structure of the DNSO will take place in Mexico,
either in Monterrey or Guadalajara, from the 14th to the 16th of November.
