Emergent and CORE expect to have a final contract signed on or before November 1, 1997. The proposed contract terms also involve Emergent's initial operation of the SRS.
CORE is the entity comprising registrars selected under the international
gTLD-MOU process: http://www.gtld-mou.org.
Formed on October 3, 1997 CORE now comprises more than 73 registrars
actively working towards deploying structures for the administration and
enhancement of the DNS. The gTLD-MOU proposes the addition of seven
new
generic Top Level Domains: .firm, .store, .web, .arts, .rec, .info,
and .nom.
The overall plan balances requirements for competition among registrars with public oversight of registration activities. Public interest concerns are addressed by the Policy Oversight Committee (POC), currently comprised of distinguished members of the internet community. POC is assisted by a Policy Advisory Body, comprising signatories to the Memorandum of Understanding. The existing top level domains for each nation, such as .au for Australia, .br for Brazil and .uk for the United Kingdom are not be affected.
